Congratulations to both of our quiz teams who have carried on our great tradition at the Tullamore Credit Union Quiz on Wednesday 12th of February.

Our junior team made up of pupils from 3rd and 4th Classes won their competition against 18 other primary schools from the Tullamore area.  It was a wonderful achievement and we are all very proud of the pupils involved.

Our senior team made up of pupils from 5th and 6th Classes did really well also.  They came second in their competition and will now advance to the All-Ireland Final which takes place in Blanchardstown on Saturday March 7th.

The children were making circuits in science class.

Over the last few days the senior classes have been learning all about how elections work in Ireland.  Today they put all the learning into practice when everyone from 3rd to 6th Class went to the polls.  Five cartoon characters were the candidates and there were two seats to be filled.  Jerry (from Tom & Jerry) topped the poll and was elected on the first count.  On the fourth count Tweety was elected having reached the quota.  Lots of learning and some fun too.

We used our ipads to learn about Ancient Egypt.

The children in Cairdeas 2 have had great fun and learned lots about our garden birds by observing our school bird feeder. We have had lots of visitors including blue tits, great tits, coal tits, starlings, house sparrows and the very colourful goldfinches. We are recording all our birds for the national garden bird survey organised by Birdwatch Ireland.

Recently the children from 5th and 6th class took part in a photography competition organised by INSPA. The theme of the competition was “Second Life”. The pupils got their thinking caps on and captured some beautiful images around the school, a sample of which can be seen in this collage.

Aquatics:

While the senior classes have been busy with swimming lessons, Mr Galvin’s class have been learning about Primary Aquatics Water Safety (PAWS).

PAWS teaches children how to be safe around water in homes, farms, pools, beaches and on our waterways. Further information on PAWS can be found here: http://www.iws.ie/education/paws.2925.html

Our Green School committee has been working very hard this year on a project for a competition run by the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland).  Read all about their great work on their newsletter here or below.

We had a wonderful time celebrating Grandparents’ Day on Wednesday 29th January.  We welcomed a great number of grandparents from all over the country.  Our celebrations started with a prayer service in our school hall.  Then our grandparents visited their grandchildren in the classrooms.  To finish the day tea and coffee was served. Thanks to all the grandparents who visited.

At its meeting on Monday 27th January the Board of Management reviewed and ratified its Child Safeguarding Statement and Risk Assessment. The board also carried out its annual audit of Child Safeguarding Procedures.
